SOURCES 2 Projects & Process –
Training Mentors for European Documentary Filmmakers

Workshop for professionals working in the field of (creative) documentary filmmaking
(filmmakers, editors, tutors, developers, commissioning editors, producers).
Three-day session, coaching period, round-off by e-mail.

Application deadline: 1^st June 2012
for the workshop in Oulu/Finland, 26^th – 30^th September 2012,
with the support of POEM – The Northern Film and Media Foundation, the Finnish Film Foundation and AVEK.

SOURCES 2 Projects & Process is an intensive training programme sharing the SOURCES 2 mentoring approach with European professionals working in the field of (creative) documentary filmmaking and project development who wish to refine their mentoring skills, expand their experience as mentors and to explore mentoring as a career opportunity.

SOURCES 2 mentors use a highly flexible range of mentoring strategies, considering that each filmmaker is unique, each project is unique and that each filmmaker draws inspiration from his/her particular part of Europe’s diverse culture. Our mentoring approach is designed to take all these elements into account.

The training programme explores:

> preparation – reading, interpreting, breaking down and analysing the project
> getting to know the author – methods for exploring the particular author’s processes
> choosing mentoring strategies – testing and revising these strategies
> mentoring the process of ‘writing documentary’
> assessment and revision
> new strategies – developing and enhancing new approaches to mentoring

During its 20 years of activity, SOURCES 2 has established a reputation for being more than simply a training programme. Our mentoring approach has proven to be extremely successful and has helped to bring a considerable number of European theatrical films to the screen. The figures speak for themselves: 100 films have been made and a number of feature and documentary projects are in production. According to our ‘Project & Process Philosophy’ the secret lies in a unique symbiotic partnership, the project brought to our workshops by European filmmakers and our process of mentoring.

SOURCES 2 Projects & Process (three-month process)

Tailored to professionals working as mentors for writers and filmmakers in the field of script and story development.

> Three-day session: Work in small groups with international colleagues; guided by experienced advisers. Keynote discussions in the evenings (no additional guest lecturers).

> Three-month coaching period: and exchange of experience in close contact with all group members.

> Round-off by e-mail: Each participant receives individual advice and a short evaluation by one of the advisers.

The format involves two or three groups with three to five participants, each guided by one adviser.

SOURCES 2 Projects & Process is offered once or twice per year, focusing on either mentors for scriptwriters or mentors for documentary filmmakers. Please see dates + places.

conditions

> Participants should be professional scriptwriters, developers or trainers who would apply the method as advisors, mentors or trainers themselves, as well as benefit personally from such training.

> Participants must be citizens of a member state of the European Community or of a country which has an agreement with the European Community concerning the MEDIA Programme.

> Participants must agree to take part in all training activities, including the reading, analysis and discussion of scripts.

> Participants will take the greatest possible care with all material entrusted to them and in no way infringe upon copyrights relating to their fellow participants’ scripts.

selection

Participation in the workshop is subject to selection which is conducted by SOURCES 2 in consultation with the experts committed to SOURCES 2 Projects & Process on the basis of the applicant’s eligibility. All candidates will be informed of the final selection at least three weeks prior to the workshop.

costs

> Participation fee for SOURCES 2 Projects & Process: € 800 per participant. Includes the three-day session (accommodations + meals included, travel costs excluded), three-month coaching period, and the round-off by e-mail.

> Payment of the full fee is due upon confirmation of selection. Cancellations must be made in writing. Cancellations made fewer than three weeks prior to the workshop starting date are subject to a cancellation fee amounting to 50% of the participation fee.

> SOURCES 2 reserves the right to cancel workshops. In such events, participation fees will be refunded.

> Personal motivation letter from the applicant outlining his/her motives for wanting to participate in the workshop, and his/her needs and expectations.

> Curriculum vitae of the applicant (personal details, professional experience, professional credits).

> Track-record of production company and/or information on broadcaster, film fund or any professional body, if relevant.

All documents received will be treated as confidential. Please make sure you keep a copy of the completed application form and enclosures. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
